Seattle Considering Overtime and Minimum Wage Laws for In-home Domestic Workers

Updated: May 11, 2021

Currently, domestic workers who work within someone’s home are not entitled to minimum wage, mandatory breaks, or overtime pay rates. Domestic workers are specifically excluded from the protections of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. However, the City of Seattle is considering certain laws that grant domestic workers the protections afforded to most other employees including minimum wage, overtime, and a right to seek compensation if not paid adequately. The Seattle City Council is expected to consider and pass the measure by the end of Summer 2018.
